This Project was for a cabin on the Appalachian Trail near the Tennessee and North Carolina border. Deliverables were to excavate onto the hillside slope and design an overnight shelter for trail blazers to rest. This cabin is near a famous cliff known as the 'Jumpoff' on the Tennessee side of the trail additionally another scenic destination is to the south on the North Carolina border known as "Charlies Bunion'. Both about a quarter mile from this rest shelter known as Ice Water spring shelter. Inspiration was to be taken from a reading in 'Life in the Woods' written by "Thoreau H. D. Walden". After reading the chapter 'Spring' I decided to use inspiration from the following paragraph. "The grass flames up on the hillsides like a spring fire-- “et primitus oritur herba imbritus primoribus evocatat” as if the earth sent forth an inward heat to greet the returning sun; not yellow but green is the color of its flame; the symbol of perpetual youth, the grass blade, like a long green ribbon, streams from the sod into the summer, checked indeed by the frost, but anon pushing on again, lifting its spear of last year’s hay with the fresh life below" (Walden). Below you will find a topography map, earth views giving one a visual and proximity of geography in this natural landscape. For modeling purposes we were required to create a 3D printed model of the topography which was first done in Rhino 3D software by tracing off of existing maps and manipulating line at different elevations. This was then saved as an STL file for 3D printing of small scale terrain. I in turn decided to make a model from a wooden block of walnut as a model to place on 3D printed model. Sketches of concept can be seen on trace paper from previous ideas eventually deciding on this one.
