Neo-Gothic vs Art Nouveau
This project was for a history of furniture class, we were required to research two designers and design a piece of furniture in their spirits. My design was influenced by Augustus Pugin a Neo-Gothic era architect from the mid 19th century and Victor Horta from the early 2oth century Art Nouveau period. This model represents an alter, desk or can even be a coffee table. Modeled using walnut wood and shaping it into a gothic style arch window was my first approach followed by shaping a soft curvature on the other side. This would serve as a table top or mantle, additionally organic curves were cut into this top with a band saw. Two Gothic arch window profiles were also made from this wood, each then would be split into two and flipped upside down and used as legs on this piece of furniture. The Art Nouveau influences are seen by the sinuous curves, and the copper etched wall paper used as a laminate over the curved side of the legs.
